Sylvia Plath Poem Analysis Essay Example

Sylvia Plath Poem Analysis Paper Sylvia Plate draws upon her personal experiences to blend a range of powerful emotions, weaving them cleverly throughout her poems. Lady Lazarus and Daddy explore her intimate struggles and how the abandonment and betrayal of masculine figures in her life shaped her views on life and death. Her carefully selected language is crucial in exhibiting her feelings about the oppression of herself as a woman and her demand of dominance over the men around her. The protagonist of Lady Lazarus Is an allegory of Sylvia Plate herself, the suicide attempts in the poem being a reflection of the poets own suicidal tendencies. The title itself is a reference to Lazarus of Betray from the Gospel of John, which suggests a similarity between the narrators resuscitation by Herr Doctor and the resurrection of Lazarus by Jesus; revived without apparent consent. This comparison to God Is repeated in her use of Herr Doctor, Herr Enemy and Herr God/Herr Lucifer linking all these figures as equals, merging their motives and Insinuating their connection as one force of evil in the form of men. This sets up a disparity between males and females. The fight for feminine control is presented powerfully within this same section of the poem, as the narrator claims she WI eat men like air. The use of the word air is effective as it is pronounced very similarly to Herr, German for Mister, used several lines earlier. This suggests that she can and will devour the masculine title of these male figures and with It any dominance of which they hold above her. The use of German words also links in with her allusions to the Holocaust, relevant to ere childhood, set in the midst of World War II. This links the subject of the poem to the situation of the Jewish people and implies the oppression and possession of herself in relation to those around her. This repression of which Plate felt In her personal life forms a motive for the several suicide attempts presented In the poem. The use of anaphora, the reiterating of phrases such as l do it so it feels like hell/l do t so it feels real, is reminiscent of her recurrent near death experiences. She states that Dying/ Is an art, like everything else, which signifies that she is performing for the people around her. They bring her back only to speculate her struggles, giving Herr Doctor and The peanut-crunching crowd dominance over her. The repetition of words, however, stresses the importance of her message to the audience and announces that her conviction is growing constantly stronger; she will not yield to those who haul her from her freedom; the freedom of death. The repetition of me and my emphasizes the protagonists independence. These words draw away from the masculine concepts of which she is expressing and remind the reader that the poem Is about her control and Is a statement that men shall not overshadow her Plashs references to the holocaust throughout Daddy resonate strongly with accounts of her strict upbringing by her authoritarian father. The poem addresses the concern of male dominance, forming a link to many of her other poems. Like in Lady Lazarus, Daddy floods the male figureheads from Plashs life with an unflattering light, and again, provides a metaphor between herself and the Jews of the Holocaust. German words are used to strengthen the metaphor linking her father to the Luftwaffe, the Mainframe and the swastika, making him represent the Nazis in her image. The poem establishes communication as one of its main concerns. Although written in English, it is sprinkled with the German words that sometimes mimic her father; ICC, ICC, ICC, ICC, sometimes address him; Ach du, and sometimes describe him; With a Mainframe look. It says that he spoke gobbledygook insinuating that she could not understand him, a lack of communication between father and daughter. Plate then writes; l began to talk like a Jew/ think I may well be a Jew, supporting further the metaphor in which her form is in complete contrast to that of her father. She also establishes that she never could talk as she claims the tongue stuck in my jaw/ It stuck in a barb wire which is reminiscent of being stuck within the fences off concentration camp in which she is confined. The narrator states in the third last stanza that The black telephones off at the root, this time suggesting a more permanent loss of contact of which she herself is the designer, as she finally realizes her wish to cut the link between herself and a man in black. The color black is used many times throughout the poem to describe the father. The black man with his fat black heart who does stand at the blackboard while he confines his only daughter within a black shoe of which she must obey him, barely daring to breathe. Black is he color of death and oppression, and expresses her lust to kill him through the murky dark pool in which she is drowning in her attempts to obey him. Its a stark contrast to the poor and white girl with the pretty red heart, white being the color of innocence and purity while red represents the devotion she still feels for her father despite the resentment she has for his controlling nature. Blue is also used to represent the freakish Atlantic/ Where it pours bean green over blue/in the waters off beautiful Nausea which links with her fathers Aryan eye, bright blue, presenting a beauty and fascination but also a coldness and feeling of detachment, again a reference to his Nazi-likeness. Despite being free verse with no specific rhyming pattern, the poem contains a constant repetition of the 00 sound that conveys the womans frustration and consistently throughout, the you being directed at daddy in an accusing and frustrated tone of the poem. In essence, Plate is recalling how her own father, emotionally repressed himself, passed on his traits to his daughter along with inflicting his arrogant nature and his digressiveness of women upon her.

Had Large Impact on Society Essays

Had Large Impact on Society Essays Had Large Impact on Society Essay Had Large Impact on Society Essay Is new and better technology being researched and developed to help improve human life. It seems that by the time you purchase the newest top of the line flat screen television, computer, car, etc. And get home theres already something newer, better and/or faster Just released to the public. Technology has changed the way we live our daily lives and will continue to evolve. During this paper I will discuss five different types of technology that I consider to be breakthrough and changed the way society lives in a positive manner. It is hard to pinpoint the exact date because of the different prototypes and first enervation versions but in the us and asss two companies IBM and Apple began producing desktop/personal computers to the public. The computer changed the way almost everything is done for the world. It made calculations, communication, storage for individuals and businesses faster, better, and more efficient. The evolution of the computer has come a long way since then, and has changed how everything Is done. It has made the phone and postal mall almost obsolete In certain cases, because It makes It faster and easier to complete certain tasks that would take much longer doing by the human brain and/or hands. The computer also made the typewriter obsolete with its ability to generate paperwork faster, cleaner, and easier to go back and edit. The second biggest technology breakthrough Id like to discuss is the internet. A government developed in the ass, which later was decided to benefit to the public changed everything including advancing the use of the computer even more. : One main reason the internet is a breakthrough is research. The internet is overloaded with useful information which is available at the click of a button. Students rarely need to visit a library anymore because all the Information can be obtained through search engine within seconds from the comfort of their home. It some cases a student even download a book to read rather than purchase or rent from the library which saves money and time. Businesses use features such as emails or electronic transactions to buy/sell products by the Internet making It easier for consumers and other businesses to do business. This allows for more revenue and faster turnaround for everyone. Email is used to communicate rather than by mail. What used to take days to come by posted mail now takes seconds. The internet can be used even for easier communication such as meetings via internet. Instead of traveling to do business or discuss matters with other people or businesses voices and live video feed can be used with computers and the internet at a moments notice. Now even with internet connections available wirelessly from practically anywhere it has become even that much more efficient and convenient. The third technology breakthrough for my paper Is the cell phone. The first mobile phone was Invented In the 1 cays which was nothing compared to what we consider a mobile cellular phone In 2009. The cell phone allows an Individual to be contacted at anytime and anywhere, signal permitting. Todays pricing, features, and quality of cell pones NAS mace teen Marlene pone almost out AT commission so to speak. Some people dont even bother having a home phone with the hustle and busy schedules people keep today. The cell phone can surf the internet at high speeds, email, display high quality video output, take photographs, record videos, store large size computer files, text message other cellular devices, instant messenger via internet connection, play video games and music, and fits in a pant pocket comfortably with no wires attached its no wonder why so many people have one. It even has made some computer features obsolete. All these features available virtually anywhere in the world from a small handheld portable device was never expected 20 years ago. Another technology breakthrough is the automotive GAPS. The automotive global positioning system has changed the automobile forever and the way transportation/ traveling is done forever. The release of the first automotive GAPS system was in the early asss which is said to be by Honda. The GAPS system is replacing the common map and websites such as Manifest. Current models allow users to plan a trip at he use of a touch screen device that has up to date maps. GAPS system can display travel time, distance, step by step directions, direct users with a computerized voice, warn of traffic patterns, accidents, construction, etc. ND provide alternate routes. This makes driving safer, faster, and gives a feeling of peace of mind. Drivers dont have to try and read a map while driving or get stuck in traffic ever again. The GAPS system now even comes standard some newer vehicles built into the center console with other features such as something simple as a CD player. GAPS systems are now also used by businesses as well and have helped a great de al. Businesses who are involved in automotive transportation or deliveries use GAPS systems to plan daily routes making them faster and more efficient. This makes it that much better for the buyer and seller. It also allows for improved fuel efficiency by shortening travel times. With the issues we have with oil/gas prices currently that can help make an impact on your average driver or a business. The final breakthrough in my opinion is the creation of the MR. machine. This machine invented in the asss by Dry. Damning changed the medical industry forever. This device has saved many lives and I personally have received the benefits of this machine. The MR. allows for a full internal scan of the human body with the use of magnets. It can catch early signs of diseases such as cancer or internal infections. Early detection of cancer using MR. machines has many lives and made the road to recovery much smoother for patients. If it wasnt for Mrs. I most likely would have lost my Uncle to lung cancer. The MR. caught early signs of cancer and allowed for plenty of time to correct the problem and prevent his early death. This is Just one of many of the benefits of an MR. machine.

Societal Functions of Religion According to Emile Durkheim and the Essay

Societal Functions of Religion According to Emile Durkheim and the Decline of Religion in the United States - Essay Example The wealth that the U.S. has enjoyed over the past decades, the freedom of expression entrenched in the U.S. Constitution, and the acceptance of other religions into the American society have diluted the place of Christianity in the U.S. The decline of Christianity in the U.S. at the expense of other religions and secularism risks to threaten the American society if it fails to provide a compromise to people from other faiths or sharing other beliefs. Such risk exists because there could be clashes between people from different communities/ faiths (e.g. Northern Ireland). The situation, however, is not alarming because religion has been replaced in the U.S. by education and to some extent a sense of patriotism. To revert back to Emile Durkheim's theory of religion, patriotism, education, the "American dream", Hollywood, etc. now ensure some form of social cohesion in the U.S. through the sharing of common values. With regard to social control, the law enforcement system and the judic iary system are now recognized as legitimate institutions to deal with conflicts. In this modern U.S. society, religion has been relegated to the personal realm and people living in the U.S. now enjoy the freedom to choose the religion that will answer their existential thirst.

Which city should hold the common wealth games montreal or kuala Essay

Which city should hold the common wealth games montreal or kuala lumpur - Essay Example It was then set to be held in Montreal. In 1946 the event was temporarily abandoned following the outcome of the war and has henceforth continued beginning 1950. The Commonwealth Games as an event normally sees such sporting activities as athletics, boxing, fencing, golf, gymnastics, tennis, Taekwondo, netball, rowing, rugby wrestling and weightlifting, just to mention a few, take place. In total, 21 sports have been approved by the Commonwealth Games Federation for the event. The games are categorized into three; core sports, optional sports and recognized sports. In every Commonwealth Games event, the core sports must be featured at the very least. Several optional sports may be picked for playing by the host nation. The recognized sports on the other hand can only be picked if the federation’s requirements in respect of the same have been fulfilled. Hosting of the international event is normally a privilege to the host country as it stands to gain in various aspects. The host country gains economically, socially and politically while at the same time receiving international attention and recognition. The massive influx of tourists and sport participants sees the host country earn a lot of foreign exchange as its nationals offer services to the visitors. Furthermore, the country’s gross domestic product for the year is bound to increase following the increase in business before, during and after the event. Two cities that have sought to host the Commonwealth Games are Kuala Lumpur and Montreal. The paper discusses the two countries in view of their suitability as hosts for the international event. Based on the discussion, a conclusion will be made stating which of the two cities is more suitable as host to an international event of this capacity. The Commonwealth Games is an international event that attracts several athletes, participants, commentators, media, organizers, business organizations, government agencies and international

Aegis Case Analysis Essay Example for Free

Aegis Case Analysis Essay The main question posed in this case is whether Aegis management should continue the relationships with their partners ProPack and POMS, and if they decided to continue with the relationships, how to structure them more effectively. Operating in a slumping economy, Aegis was worried about their level of sales resulting from the partnerships they had entered into. The main goal for Aegis when entering into both partnerships was to bolster sales, and neither company had accomplished that. With the possibility of terminating either relationship, Aegis would have to find another strategy for improved sales. With the absence of this strategy, it will be more productive for the company to restructure their existing relationships. Looking at this case through the concept of strategic alliances will help to find a strategy that will pull Aegis out of its downhill slide. For both relationships, Aegis has entered into licensing and distribution agreements. POMS and ProPack have combined their name with Aegis for separate products, as well as working together to distribute each other’s products. Unfortunately, in this situation economies of scale will not work to lower costs because of the nature of the product and the industry Aegis is competing in. Aegis and its partners have developed a product that is the technological standard for its category, but can continue to add value to the product, making it desirable and useful in the future. In my opinion, the best way to increase the benefits of these relationships is to foster an environment of trust and communication to operate in. This may mean revisiting the contracts that are in place to redefine what each entity wants out of the agreement, and the best way to go about creating sales. If they can do this effectively I believe the companies will work better together, creating more value for potential customers. This will result in an increase in sales for their products.

Reaction in Milton’s Paradise Lost and Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macbeth :: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays

Reaction in Milton’s Paradise Lost and Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macbeth It goes without saying that we all react to the experiences that we have. What differs from person to person is how those experiences affect our being and what each of us takes from those experiences and how we apply it to our lives from that point on. We see this happening not only in our own lives, but also in literature. The characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macbeth and those from Milton’s Paradise Lost show, through their conflicts, that the experiences that they are exposed to affect their lives in a negative way. In all three of these pieces of literature, the reactions the characters have to their experiences are what bring about their ultimate demise. Unfortunately, these characters don’t realize the error of their actions until it’s too late, but we, as the audience, can learn from the mistakes we see the characters make in Hamlet, Macbeth and Paradise Lost. Hamlet was forced to endure many painful experiences, and the ways in which he chose to react to those experiences are what largely contributed to the tragedy. In his essay dealing with Hamlet and the loss of innocence, Godshalk claims that â€Å"the prince...begins the play dreaming of innocence and personal integrity, and in the course of action, this innocence and integrity are severely compromised.† (221) This is indeed true, as the experiences that Hamlet is forced to endure whittle away at his innocence, and as he reacts to these experiences, he is driven by his reactions to act in a way where he must abandon his integrity. The death of King Hamlet took a toll on Young Hamlet, inducing grief and sorrow to the mourning son. In fact, it seemed that just two months after the King’s death, Hamlet was the only one left feeling any kind of sorrow. The experience of losing a loved one, especially his father, was too much for Hamlet and he was too grief stricken in th e eyes of some, Claudius especially. Claudius inquired of Hamlet, â€Å"How is it that the clouds still hang on you?† (1.2.66) Claudius seems to think that Hamlet has little reason to still be grieving over the death of his father. Claudius continues: ‘Tis sweet and commendable in your nature, Hamlet, To give these mourning duties to your father:
